“A common misconception is that sex swings are predominantly used for BDSM fun, but this couldn’t be further from the truth,” says sex expert Jess Wilde. “Sex swings are used to enhance all kinds of sex play and are not limited to BDSM scenes,” she explains, adding that using a sex swing doesn’t need to involve any kind of power play.
So what are they used for? It’s simple. “Also known as a ‘sex position enhancer’, sex swings make otherwise-impossible sex positions, possible,” Jess explains.

One partner will be suspended in the swing while the other is standing on the ground, making positions like standing sex much easier. Meanwhile, the partner in the swing can also be fully reclined, essentially floating in the air. Fun, right?

There’s no one reason to use a sex swing, and the answer might be that you just want to try it! However, there are some pretty practical reasons for using a sex swing, like to help with a distinct height difference between you and your partner, or for people with disabilities, says Jess.
“Sex swings allow you to work smarter, not harder in the bedroom,” adds Annabelle. “They can give you access to new positions without requiring you to be an acrobat or super flexible,” she continues – and let’s be honest, no one wants to be pulling a muscle.

How to stay safe using a sex swing
Of course, make sure you always follow the instructions for the sex swing you’re using. Check how much weight it can hold, where it can be suspended from, and make sure you’ve fastened all the clips correctly. It’s worth spending a bit longer setting it up to avoid any injuries.
If it’s your first time using a sex swing, your body will probably be placed in a whole bunch of positions it’s not used to, so don’t push yourself if it doesn’t feel right.
“When using a swing, just listen to your body,” says Annabelle. “If your muscles start screaming at you, tell your partner and adjust the straps or your limb placement.” And remember, adds Anabelle: “Never leave a restrained person unattended – even for a moment.”
